Level of Protection

Understanding what drives PPE selection decisions — and why. Work through the scenario conditions to explore the reasoning behind each level.

01 Product Identity Required
Known Product
Identity confirmed — SDS, ERG, or placard data available. Hazard profile established.
Class Identified — Product Unknown
Hazard class known (e.g., flammable liquid, corrosive) but specific product unconfirmed.
Unknown Product
No identity, no placard, conflicting information, or no reliable data available.
02 Inhalation / Vapor Hazard Required
None or Negligible
Non-volatile solid, no airborne hazard, or vapor hazard confirmed absent.
Low — APR Likely Adequate
Vapor present, TLV well above typical exposure. Air-purifying respirator with appropriate cartridge likely sufficient.
Moderate — APR Required
Vapor present, TLV requires respiratory protection. Specific filter cartridge available and appropriate.
High — Highly Toxic Vapor
Low TLV/IDLH, immediately dangerous to life, or IDLH-level exposure confirmed or suspected. APR not appropriate.
Unknown
Vapor characteristics not yet established. Cannot confirm safety of air-purifying approach.
03 Skin & Contact Hazard Required
None
No significant skin hazard. Contact would cause no meaningful harm.
Irritant — Localized Effect
Contact causes localized irritation. No significant systemic risk. Standard chemical protective clothing manages risk.
High — Corrosive or Systemic Absorption
Acid, base, or chemical causing tissue destruction — OR absorbed through intact skin causing systemic toxicity.
04 Atmospheric Conditions Required
Normal O₂, Concentration Below IDLH
O₂ 19.5–23.5%, hazardous concentration measured and confirmed below IDLH.
Concentration Unknown
Hazard present or suspected but true atmospheric concentration not yet established.
At or Above IDLH
Measured or estimated at IDLH level or higher. Air-purifying respirators are not appropriate above IDLH.
O₂ Deficient or Enriched
Below 19.5% (deficient) or above 23.5% (enriched). APR cannot address oxygen abnormality — supplied air required.
05 Additional Hazards Select all that apply
Fire Involvement
Active combustion present at or near the release.
Radiological Hazard
Radiation source confirmed or suspected.
Biological Hazard
Biological agent confirmed, suspected, or cannot be ruled out.
Temperature Extremes
Cryogenic release or high-temperature environment.
